John Wilton splits his time between London and Brno in the Czech Republic, as a Professor of International Relations and European Studies.
In his professional capacity he conducted extensive research into 1989 revolutions in East and Central Europe, particularly Romania and the former Czechoslovakia. His research interests have taken him to a number of cities and regions of the former Soviet Union, and subsequently Russia, including a visit to the Gorbachev Foundation in Moscow. His other research area interest is nineteenth century Russian literature and the Russian political tradition.
John's time living and working in the Czech Republic over the past more than thirty years inspired his book The Hope, based on historical events in Czechoslovakia in 1989.
He has been a regular visitor to Lindos on the island of Rhodes over the past twenty years or more. Four whole summers he spent living there in the beautiful tourist village, together with subsequent visits, inspired his trilogy of murder mystery novels Lindos Retribution (2016), Lindos Aletheia (2017) and Lindian Summers (2018), as well as his subsequent novels, Lindos Affairs (2019), Lindian Odyssey (2020), Lindos Eros and Hades (2021), Karagoulis (2022), Four Lindos July days (2023) and Lindos lightness of being (2024).
John's preferred writing genre is historical fiction. His favourite books include: Anna Karenina (Leo Tolstoy), The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Milan Kundera), Bring Up The Bodies (Hilary Mantel), and The Glass Room (Simon Mawer).
